If you are looking for coconuts and golden sandy beaches, then with it's black volcanic sand, Madeira is probably not the place for you. However, the island's beaches are popular for their high standards, crystal clear water and pleasant temperature. Golden sand can be found in Calheta and Machico where it has been imported especially!
Covered with exotic vegetation, Madeira is a fascinating natural ecological reserve and two thirds of the total area of the island is protected. From the seashore to the highest mountain peaks, there are many wondrous locations for you to explore and enjoy.
In 1982 Madeira's Regional Government declared two thirds of the island a nature reserve. For the visitor this means that you are not allowed to pick, damage or disturb the native species. The protected area of this park includes the Laurissilva Forest, the Natural Reserves of the Desertas and the Selvagens Islands, the Natural Reserve of Garajau, the Natural Reserve of Rocha do Navio and the Natural Park itself.
Maderias markets are perfect to pick up a local bargain. Originally, these regional markets were set up for selling flowers, but they expanded to all kinds of agricultural products and local food specialities such as 'bolo de caco' bread, grilled chicken and wheat soup.
The large market in Funchal's Old Town is called the 'Mercado dos Lavradores'. This is open Monday to Friday from 07.00 - 20.00. These markets are the perfect way to sample local life.
