Resort information (within a 1 hour drive of the dialysis unit):

Ammoudara - This is a small beach resort, west of Heraklion. The resort has a long stretch of roadside gift shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels and apartments from luxury to cheap. There are beach edge tavernas used by both tourists and locals. Heraklion is a 15-20 minute bus ride away.

Aghia Pelaghia - Around 20km from Heraklion, this resort is well know for it's impressive bay. There is a narrow but sandy beach around the bay, bordered by gardens and an exotic zoo. This is a popular resort for watersports and it's waterfront tavernas overlooking the bay.

Bali - This is a very picturesque, relaxed and traditional resort. Built around four coves, this fishing village offers an excellent choice of fish tavernas, especially around the quaint old harbour. Nightlife is low key and centered around local tavernas and bars. Bali is situated on the North coast of the island.

Rethymnon - A resort known for it's superb beaches. Built around a harbour, this contrasting resort offers a bustling atmosphere of the harbour front along with the tradtional old part of the town where there are narrow alleyways and beautiful old buildings. The beach starts in the centre of town and has a lovely promenade with a great choice of bars and tavernas.

Kokkini Hani - This resort is to the east of Ammoudara. It has a quieter feel than nearby Hersonisos. It has a great beach atmosphere with its watersports, hotels, apartments and local tavernas. Located 10 minutes from Heraklion, it is a quick and easy transfer.

Gouves - This resort is to the east of Kokkini Hani, situated on the north coast of the island. The resort is small, offering a relaxing environment with a choice of shops and restaurants, with a sandy/rocky bay.

Hersonissos - This resort has a lively nightlife, but with a picturesque and traditional charm. It is one of Crete's liveliest resorts and is well known for its scores of cafes, restaurants, bars, discos and English style pubs lining the sea front. The beach is shingle and sand, where you may want to have a go at watersports. Alternatively, you can visit the old villages with their tranquil settings, charming tavernas and pretty houses.

Stalis - A rapidly expanding resort situated between its livelier neighbours, Hersonissos and Malia. It has a vast, beautiful sandy beach where watersports are plentiful. The resort has a rather laid back atmosphere and a number of lively bars, excellent restaurants and tavernas lining the beach.

Malia - One of the most liveliest resorts in the whole of the Greek Islands, Malia is known for coming alive at night. On the other hand, the old village with its lovely tavernas and typical old village style houses provides a relaxed atmosphere. Malia has one of the best sandy beaches on the island, on the whole it is fun-loving and extremely busy.

Sissi - This small resort offers an excellent choice for a slow relaxing paced holiday with its pretty harbour and narrow streets filled with small shops. Sissi remains an unspoilt and uncommercialised resort, perfect for those trying to get away from it all.

Excursions and Tours

Samaria Gorge Walk - This walk starts from the White Mountains and the Omalos Plateau where there is a possibility of breakfast. The entrance of the gorge that the walk goes down is 4000ft up, the longest in Europe. The walk goes down the gorge over the rocks and stones, through a forest and along the springs into the most impressive mountain section of Crete. Here you will get the chance to see the last Kri-Kris (wild mountain goats). This walk can be very difficult so strong trainers or walking boots are required.

Samaria Lazy Way - A bus takes you to Hora Sfakion, from there a ferry takes you to Agia Roumeli, the south end of the gorge. Here, you will be able to walk until you reach the Iron Gates at the most narrow part of the Samaria Gorge. There is time for a swim and lunch, before the boat takes you back to the bus in the evening. This is an easier walk than the above tour.

Imbros Gorge - This is a good trip for families and less able tourists. The Imbros gorge runs parallel with the Samaria gorge. Although this gorge is not as well know as the Samaria, its natural beauty runs for 5 miles presenting an easier walk for vistors. After the gorge visit, a bus will take you to a beautiful beach at the Lybian sea for a swim.

Discover Knossos Palace - The first palace of the Minoan culture, a main feature of Crete. A conducted tour of the palace of King Minos and archaeological museum of Heraklion takes place, giving you a chance to learn more about Crete's culture and history.

Spinalonga - One of the most famous spots in Crete and the main setting for Victoria Hyslop's novel The Island, Spinalonga is sometimes called the 'island of tears' due to its past as a leper colony. Between 1903 and 1957, it was home to hundreds of Greece's lepers, who were shipped here and then forbidden to leave. On this trip, you'll ride a boat to the island from Elounda. You willl then have a guided walk around the remains of the colony, established within the walls of a huge Venetian fortress. There is a main street, lined with the shops and houses where the lepers attempted to live ordinary lives.

Chania City and Cretan Villages - On the way to Chania, the tour takes the old road and drives through some of the pictureque villages. The first stop is at the green villages of Stylos, famous for its fresh water springs. After that, the tour heads downhill revealing a fantastic view of Souda Bay. A stop at the English war-cemetery gives a chance for a walk around the former capital by foot, a spot of lunch and opportunities to shop at the beautiful Venetian harbour.

Go Greek - If you've ever been to a Greek restaurant for a 'Greek Night', you'll know just how entertaining they are! Entertainment and fun is what this evening trip serves up. The fun begins when you get taken to a local taverna where you're treated to a 'meze' dinner and free-flowing wine. As you eat, you're entertained by a packed programme of Greek dancing, sing alongs and colourfully dressed dancers showing off their Greek steps. As the evening unfolds. let the bouzouki music tempt you on to the floor so you too can show off your dancing feet to the famous 'sirtaki'. Zorba, the Greek classic, involves everyone forming a line, linking arms and kicking along to the ever-faster music. You never know, a few plates might even be thrown! The event lasts around two and a half hours, when the return bus arrives to take you back to your chosen resort.

Aghios Nikolaos Market and Kritsa - If you like sight seeing and shopping, then this is the best morning trip to go on. After leaving the resort, a drive through Crete's countryside will show you more of the island, before arriving at Aghios Nikolaos. Tucked in to the North East coast, this is a small buzzing town set between Mirabello Bay and a ridge of dramatic hills. You will be given a couple of hours to explore it's open-air market, shops, harbour and waterfront cafes. You will then leave Aghios Nikolaos for Krista, where you will find lots of Cretan crafts, embroidered lines, hand-woven rugs or hand made pottery to buy.
